Will social networks withstand a severe downturn?

I have absolutely no data on this whatsoever so this post is really just hypothesizing.

My question to the group is...

If people's lives start taking a turn for the worst thanks to this recession, will they be as willing to share what's happening in their lives or will pride start taking over?

One interesting research project would be to interview people at various stages of unemployment – recently laid off, maybe 3 months and then 6 months to a  year – and talk to them about/journal their social network activity during their unemployment.

My hypothesis would be – if one believes that social networking will help one land another job, then it's possible that there is a rise in social network activity as one feels that network will ease the search. But if one's personal economic status worsens beyond a certain threshold, it's human nature to pull back if not withdraw altogether. I think there will also be an age difference, with Gen X more likely to pull back and circle the wagons. Thoughts?
